Friday's High Street Hitlist

Ladies, your four day Easter weekend has arrived, which means two things - shopping and chocolate, and lots of it.

Of course, it's hard to shop when stores are chock-full of pretty summer dresses and sandals, which we know would cause us to turn an unfetching shade of blue if we dared to wear them.

However, I've been told that sunshine is around the corner (hard to believe, I know), so I need to step up a gear and get my spring wardrobe fixed!

Here is our pick of this week's drops, so get your virtual elbows at the ready and go, go, go!

Sam x

P.S Can I just ask - what is with the high street's obsession with moustaches at the moment? They're on necklaces, bags, hair bobbles, tees. Why are they everywhere?!

Chocolatey Treats for Easter Weekend

HURRAH! It's nearly Easter weekend, so let's count our chickens and celebrate the four day weekend with a bumper load of treats.

To us, there really is no better way of enjoying a long weekend than by devouring slab after slab of chocolate. So, as an Easter treat, I thought I'd share a super cute recipe that any kids (overgrown or actual) will simply adore.

This BBC Good Food recipe for Chocolate Krispie Chicks is utterly adorable and, quite frankly, it would be tempting to not eat it. But we will, because...well...you know how greedy we are.

Of course, if you really want to indulge, why not have a go at making the Cadbury's Creme Egg Brownies I posted last week? Just look at them....what are you waiting for? Goo on! (Sorry)

I'm also going to treat you to my latest addition to the Brownie family, a Peanut Butter Pretzel Brownie. Oh YES.

Wow, chocolate overload. But hey, it is Easter after all...

So, hop to it and get baking! Next week, I'll give you some healthy recipes. Promise.

Chocolate Krispie Chick

Ingredients

For the egg:
175g milk chocolate , broken into pieces, plus extra for decorating
50g Rice Krispies cereal

To decorate:
2 x 50g bags chocolate mini eggs
2 white chocolate buttons
50g golden marzipan
25g white chocolate , broken into pieces, plus extra for decorating, melted and cooled a little

Equipment:
2 chocolate egg moulds, piping bag, rolling pin, flat pastry brush or small paintbrush

Method:

1) Break the chocolate and melt in 30 second blasts in the microwave. Stir until smooth, then stir in the Rice Krispies, mixing well to coat. Spoon half the mix into one of the moulds, pressing into a thick, even layer. Repeat with the other mould and leave in a cool place to set, then place the moulds in the fridge for 5 mins.

2) Slowly unmould the eggs, then fill one half with a few mini eggs, before fixing the halves together with melted chocolate. Leave in a cool place to set.

3) Now start decorating your chick! To make the eyes, paint blobs of melted milk chocolate onto the white chocolate buttons. Fix onto the egg using a little more chocolate. Spoon the white chocolate into a small piping bag, then pipe a beak and wings onto the egg and allow to set.

4) For the feet, roll out the marzipan on a sheet of greaseproof paper to about ½ cm thick. Using a knife, cut out two feet, making them large enough for the egg to sit on. Once the egg has completely set, place the chick on its feet, pressing down so that it stays upright. Finish by scattering some mini eggs around your chick to create a nest.

Peanut Butter and Pretzel Brownies

Ingredients:

For the brownie:
165g butter
200g dark chocolate, finely chopped
3 free-range eggs
2 free-range egg yolks
2 tsp vanilla extract
165g soft light brown sugar
2 tbsp plain flour
1 tbsp cocoa
Pinch salt

For the topping:
120g butter
250g smooth peanut butter
190g icing sugar
One pack Cadbury's Pretzels

Method:
1) To make the brownies, preheat the oven to 180C, then grease a 20cm/8in square baking tin with butter and line with baking paper.

2. Melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat. When the butter has melted, remove the pan from the heat and add the chocolate. Leave to stand for a few minutes, then stir together until melted and gooey.

3. Whisk the eggs, egg yolks and vanilla together in a large bowl until the eggs begin to get light and fluffy.

4) Now add the sugar in two additions, whisking between each, but be sure to pour it around the side of the egg mix so as not to knock out the air. Keep whisking until the mixture becomes stiffer. Once the egg mixture is ready, pour the chocolate into it - again around the sides so as not to knock the air out.

5) Add the flour, cocoa powder, salt and stir until fully combined, then pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 25–30 minutes.

6) Once the brownies are cooked (I leave mine slightly gooey, but until a toothpick comes out clean), leave to cool and then start making your frosting.

7) To make the frosting, beat the butter and peanut butter with an electric whisk until completely smooth and no more chunks of butter can be seen. Slowly stir in the icing sugar until you have a nice, thick frosting, then beat until fluffy.

8) Spread across the cooled brownies, then top with the Cadbury's Pretzels. YUM!

Can You Afford To Have A Child?

We have a fantastic post today from Alex Bifulco, a very experienced writer who is currently on maternity leave. She is questioning the issue of having a baby in the current economic climate. Quick, go and grab yourselves a cuppa and a biscuit, digest and let us know your thoughts.

Can You Afford To Have A Child?

This year's budget heralded a new hope on the horizon for sleep deprived mummies and daddies not only worrying about whether that rash on little Johnny really was prickly heat, but how on earth a nasty winter gas bill or newly huge shopping budget was getting paid.

In his budget, George Osborne promised to support hard working families with a lower income tax bill, help with childcare, a huge boost for homebuyers and help with some every-day costs.

But, in these troubled times and 2015 being just that bit too far away to breathe a sigh of relief just yet, what can we do to look after the pennies while we raise our little rocket scientists?

While some people might joke that being married to an accountant brings the wrong meaning to 50 Shades of Grey, it isn't all boring facts and figures.

He might eat, sleep and breathe number crunching and financial forecasts but his astuteness meant we planned ahead from the minute the little blue line appeared. And with people now believing that the cost of raising a child to 21 has now rocketed to over £222,000 this was one thing I didn't find so boring!

For the first time in my life I created a spreadsheet and projected forecast during early pregnancy. This outlined incoming figures and outgoing costs for the year to come and how long I really could afford to take off on maternity leave.

baby budget

It highlighted where we'd need to pull the belt in and looked ahead to any nasty bills that might appear in a future filled with only three hours sleep a night. For instance, car servicing, increased food bills and how much extra nappies would really cost.

I also started saving from the minute I knew I was pregnant. Did I really need to eat out, have a takeaway once a week, buy those new clothes I wouldn't get a chance to wear until they'd gone out of fashion? I managed to put aside money every month during my pregnancy and this is now what I'm living on, alongside a meagre maternity allowance. How grateful am I to forego the odd kebab!

Finally, some other things I found useful were, firstly, not to be precious about hand me downs from friends' children. They really are only in them for five minutes and most stuff comes to you in a virtually new condition. Likewise, I will do the same for my pregnant friends.

It makes sense to buy nappies in advance, but be warned, those little poo machines grow at a rate of knots, so buy up the sizes. It may seem strange buying size two and three nappies before your little one has even come into the world but the planet suffers enough from used nappies being chucked away, let alone unused ones!

Gifts from friends and family are brilliant but the last thing you want is lots of baby's first tooth/ lock of hair/ shoe boxes. Ask for clothes or toiletries and allocate sizes to people (in the nicest possible way of course).

Lastly, I know I've said it before but save from the start! And do make the most of KIT days... Would it really be so hard to go back into the office and catch up with your mates for a day, while the poo machine stays with granny? You'll get paid for it too - yes real money! Something I don't envisage seeing for quite some time!

Can We Really Have It All?

It’s no secret that I am always on the go, that I like to pretend I’m Super Woman.

Rest is not something that comes easily to me. In fact, it doesn’t come to me, full-stop.

Hell, I even do hip extensions when I’m brushing my teeth, or the plank when I’m watching the telly. To me, relaxing is like some sort of evil, heinous crime. And I always wonder why, come Friday, I’m a walking, talking, sleepless Zombie...

Reading Katie Portman’s wonderful post on Pouting in Heels really struck a chord. She said that she was often her own worst enemy, which made me stop and think. Why are we so hard on ourselves? Why do we women feel this need to be constantly perfect?

Are we doing too much? Are we taking it too far?

Looking at it now, it’s blindingly, brilliantly obvious. Yes, we are – we need to take it easier on ourselves, we need to learn to RELAX.

Us ladies are always on the go. Not content with being Super Woman, we want to be Wonder Woman, Cat Woman and perhaps even Batman and Spider Man too. We want to be able to do it all.

I’ve often found that we are our own harshest critics. Not just on our appearance, but on the way we are too – not content with having it all at work, we like to have it all at home too.

But is it really plausible? And at what expense are we paying to have it all?

I never think that what I do is good enough. I never feel I work hard enough. Yet, looking at my typical day now, it’s ridiculous – I get up earlier than baby so that I can fit in a morning workout, I then shovel down breakfast so that I can go and tend to him.

I then play with him for a bit, make all his food for the day, then bundle us up and rush out the door, ready to meet someone or go somewhere.

We come home, then I’ll put him down for a nap and clean, clean, clean. I then fit in another workout before he wakes, before popping him into his Jumperoo (sorry non-mums) and slotting in some work.

Next time he naps, I make dinner, then do some more cleaning and more work. We then all head out to take the dog on a long walk. By the time hubby arrives home, I’m on my feet, yet I STILL decide to fit in another workout. WHY?

At what point do I take a break? When do I say enough is enough?

Surely it’s OK to pop my bum on the sofa and enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake every now and then? And what's wrong with snuggling up with a steaming mug of hot chocolate (better yet, red wine) instead of rushing round making hubby's lunch box, or doing the washing up? Don’t all of us ladies deserve this?

So, I am rising to Katie’s challenge. Starting from today, I am going to enjoy some me time. Every single day.

Whether that be a bath, a quiet cuppa in front of the TV, or a moment or two to read my books, I will do it.

Let’s say it, once and for all – Super Woman is gone.

Are you going to join me?

NOT INTO THIS

1.  The lack of spring. Where is it? I can't hear the birds singing in the morning, there's hardly any snowdrops or crocuses and what about drying my washing outside?

2.   I am sick of the sight of Kim Kardashian. I have never watched the reality show following her glamorous lifestyle, so maybe my opinion doesn't count for much. But, I don't care because I'm sick of seeing her everywhere. I don't care what she is wearing or how big her bottom is, she's pregnant for crying out loud. How can a woman whose bridal bouquet lasted longer than her wedding get so much press?

3.   Why are all the high street shops full of bralets? I've not seen a single girl wearing one in Leicestershire and I doubt there's many anywhere else other than in pop wannabe wardrobes.

4.   Suggested posts get out of my Facebook newsfeed. I'm not interested. And that goes for Candy Crush Saga requests too.

5.   I cannot stand public swimming pools. My biggest gripe is with male swimmers. They dive in, swim a length, come up for air and then grab the snot/slime from their noses and dispose of it in the water. Makes me wretch!

6.   Convenience stores which overcharge because you can't go anywhere else. Hospital shops to be precise. Whilst attending a hospital appointment the other week I was feeling rather ravenous so popped to the shop in the hospital. £1.39 for the thinnest slice of flapjack and £1.69 for some pop. I wouldn't have minded if it was for WRVS but it wasn't. It was a newsagents within the hospital. Rip off!

7.   Men who think it is acceptable to put football on my television. Football is only allowed in my house when it's the World Cup. My nephew Lewis is a sod for switching it on whenever he visits my home.

8.   Dog diarrhoea. I shall spare you the details of this. All I shall say is fluffy dog and sloppy poo are not a great combination; have got through a lot of baby wipes this week.

9.   I am getting very irritated by the title "Mumpreneur" that seems to be flying around. How about women who don't have children, what do you call them? And how about Alan Sugar and Richard  Branson, why isn't anyone calling them Dadpreneurs?

10.  Men who grow their beards long and braid it into some sort of beard ponytail thing. It looks like you've stuck anal beads to your chin. Stupid!

Our Infamous High Street Hitlist

Are you getting fed up with the high street fashion? We are. We don't want to dress like Rita Ora or Little Mix. Please give us clothes that we can wear when we go to the supermarket, when we meet our friends for lunch and when we go to the cinema.

I have had a very thorough search of the high street for this week's hitlist and I have managed to find 43 lovely items hidden amongst the bounty of bralets and hotpants which seem to be flooding the stores at the moment.
